ITS Device – Dynamic Message Sign (DMS)

DMS will provide advisory information to drivers about incidents, events, construction and maintenance activities, road closures that affect the freeways, and freeway travel times to certain locations. NDOT and FAST implement, maintain and operate freeway DMS to information to the drivers and travelers. The DMSs are normally installed before the major freeway exit or interchange so that drivers can get detour information before exit.

The DMSs are mainly used to:

1.       Post travel times to drivers. Travel times on DMS are updated every 5 minutes. You can also check the current DMS messages through FAST DMS web interface;

2.       Provide drivers about incidents, events, construction and maintenance activities, road closures or detour information;

3.       Post amber alert message for homeland security.
